How to reduce cognitive decline & other news (November 2023 update)

Welcome to the November update from Island Healthcare!

We’re excited to share a few updates from our homes on the Isle of Wight. We’ve also picked out a couple of news stories we think you’ll be interested to read about.

News from Island Healthcare

First off, this month we celebrated two of our staff members hitting big milestones. Jean Baxter marks an astonishing 30 years with us, and Lynn Williams celebrates 26 years of service. We are immensely grateful for their contributions and honoured to have them as part of our Island Healthcare family. Here's to many more years of excellence!

Of course, recently it was Halloween. Naturally, we did our best to have a very spooky time. Here is the team at Northbrooke House showing off their costumes:

Healthcare news stories

Now, let’s take a look at a couple of stories from the wider healthcare sector.

First up, there is a heartwarming news story from the BBC. They’ve shared the story of Jimmy Cooper - a nurse who is still working at 80 years old without planning to retire. He is hoping to stay working for more years to come, saying that “keeping up” with the other staff members, helps him stay “fit and young.”

Jimmy's story is a testament to the enduring passion that can fuel a lifelong commitment to the well-being of others. We love to hear positive, inspiring stories like this!

You can check out the full story here.

In other news stories, the Guardian has shared a helpful article on cognitive decline and how to maintain a healthy brain through the years.

The article suggests the following to protect your brain:

  • Regular physical activity

  • A healthy body weight

  • Managing medical conditions, such as high blood pressure

  • Keeping your brain active with brain training and social interaction

  • Eating a balanced diet.

It sounds like sage wisdom to us. Here is the article if you would like to learn more.

That brings us to the end of this month’s update. If you have any questions for us about the services we offer or how we could help, please get in touch!
